John Dunkerley is one of the most highly regarded recording engineers, with over 500 important classical CD's credited to him. He is also one of the most highly regarded professioanl critics and has been an idependant listening colnsultant for B&W for over 30 years. We were priveledged that recently John Dunkerley reviewed a set of pre-production Platinum speaker cables in Bi-WIre format. Below is his report which, from John, is a firm mark of approval. Audition of PLATINUM speaker cables by John Dunkerely. My initial reaction was that this cable gave a very detailed sound field with every nuance reproduced. I have listened to a large variety of material over a period of time. Gradually the sonic signature of the cable became apparent. The most immediate building block is the phase coherence as reproduced by the cable. Timing is impeccable, particularly in the bass domain. The sound stage is very deep and coherent with the smallest detail correctly apportioned. Imaging in the lateral plane is probably as good as I have heard, outside the Penthouse studio at Abbey Road; via B&W 800 speakers. Interestingly, these levels of detail and imaging seem to translate outside the immediate listening area, which I can only put down to the phase coherence of the cable. Unlike the earlier Moving Air cable, this does not exhibit a bright and rather brittle character. However, I feel that the harmonics tend to have greater sonic weight than the fundamentals, which can lead to a loss of depth in the sound stage. The ambience cues are subdued, especially in the 12 – 16 khz region. I was able to ameliorate this effect on my Meridian 861 processor by slightly down tilting the treble in the presence band. This has achieved the desired effect: the depth of sound stage has returned along with the ambience cues. Also all the coherence and precision in the lateral domain, have been retained. If the slight tonal imbalance could be corrected, I would be extremely happy. |
