"Need is the mother of invention" 'Studio Connections' cable was developed to provide the high very high 'tranparent' performance cable within the studios. Infact this was never really intended, but when we were planning the studio build, various cables were being tested and it was became clear that every cable that we tried changed the sound in someway. Each cable left its own 'signaure' in the sound. If there is any doubt about the inflence that a cable has, a test that really accentuates this is to wire a set of stereo speakers with one brand or type of cable on the left speaker and another type of cable on the right. Many effects can be observed, including and off centre stereo image and tonal changes. In fact in one test we did, the sound was so different on each speaker that we thought for a moment that the speaker driver was faulty! Ideally a recording or replay system should not take away from the accuracy or musicallity of the sound quality whatever the medium (CS, Vinyl, tape, live sound). In realty, each part of a system will add some charcteristic sound, so a designers job is to keep his part as smusical and non-obtrusive as possible. As we had observed such radical difference in cable performace, and have a cable technoclagy specialist on our team (Michael Whiteside has worked on cables from Submarine use to Satalite- and everything in between!) its seemed an inevtiable mission that we should concentrate on this Cables can alter the way a system works qite radically. There are many weLl documented reasons for this, but in summary, 1 The electrical properites of the cable will directly change the audio signal 2 They will interact electrically with the equipment they connect to 3 They can trasfer mechanially vibration between equipment 4 Cable will raditate and pick up electromangnetic interference 5 Electo mechanical linkage to other cables or eaquipment 5 Electro chemical reactions between differnt metals well there are plenty more.... In fact the effect that cable has on sound is a complex mix of all of these. Our cable desinger draws his experience from years of working with high performance cables for scientific, industrial and satalite applications. You may be supirsed, but there can be as many as over 100 parameters in the desing of a cable, and each varaiton of each parameter inlfuence a qualtiy of the cable. For specialist cables, the desing should have a good understanding of the application, know about all the technicaques and materails avaialable and be able desin all the vatiales to give the optimum required result. As part of our research, we scientifically analysyed all variables and monitored the results of varying the parameters on the sound in the studios. This gave a good picture and understanding of each part of the cable influenced the quality in a system, and why. Our engineers also have a long backgound in audio electronics and loud speaker design and bridging the gap between the best mastering studios and your home.... |
